I've often heard children say, "There's nothing to do today". I beg to differ. I'd like to inspire you to do something. Anything. Read. Bake. Hike. Fish. Plant. Sail. Climb. Play. Reach. Move. Laugh. Dream; and take time to sit with me on The Old Granite Step.

A recipe for my Mom's Bread and Butter Pickles; makes a great gift!

This holiday season, give

a homemade food gift!  My mom's pickle recipe makes a quick perfect gift.  I used cucumbers from the garden but there's no need to grow them yourself.  Simply pick up six pints of cukes at your local grocer.  Make sure to sterilize your jars and lids before you begin.
You'll also need 6 small white onions (chopped), 2 cloves of garlic (chopped, 1/2 cup of salt, 5 cups of sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoonfuls of turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon of celery seed, 2 tablespoonfuls of mustard seed and 3 cups of cider vinegar.
Wash and slice your cucumbers.
Place your cucumbers into a brine you've made from 2 quarts of water and 1/2 cup of salt.  Let stand for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
While the cukes are sitting in the brine, dissolve the sugar in the vinegar using a saucepan.
Add the celery seed, turmeric and mustard seed.  Cook slowly for 10 minutes.
Strain the cucumbers from the brine and add them to the vinegar mixture.
Bring to a boil and remove from the stove.
Fill jars and seal.
Pair a jar of pickles with a loaf of bread and it makes a wonderful gift made with love!
