I've often heard children say, "There's nothing to do today". I beg to differ. I'd like to inspire you to do something. Anything. Read. Bake. Hike. Fish. Plant. Sail. Climb. Play. Reach. Move. Laugh. Dream; and take time to sit with me on The Old Granite Step.

Pressing cider at Cold Hollow in Vermont.

This is my favorite time of year.  It could have something to do with the fact that I have an October birthday or it could be a thought motivated by the color of fall.  The crisp red, yellow and orange leaves create landscapes worthy of framing.  Apple trees at the side of the road bend over to touch the ground; heavy with so much fruit!  We made a visit to Cold Hollow Cider Mill in Waterbury Center, Vermont last week.  The mill was bustling with employees and customers alike.
Visitors can purchase apples by the pound.
Inside, the mash was "piped" onto the press.  It only took several minutes to fill each layer.

The cider press.  It literally presses the juice out of the mash.

Visitors were allowed to sample the fresh cider.  There's nothing like it!
There were many examples of cider presses on display.
I like the small size of this one.
The operation is available for public viewing.  Kids love it!

Look at the teeth inside this press.  More of a grinder I think.

Baskets galore available for purchase.  Not sure about the cider barrel!
A more intricate press.
This is similar to the one we have in the barn.

Fall was proudly displayed around the mill.
This was in the parking lot!
We love this truck that was out back.  With the solar panels in the background, it's old meets new.
Love the blue truck against the blue sky.  A perfect day in Vermont.
There were stacks of apple crates ready to go.

Look for Cold Hollow Cider at a store near you; it's delicious hot or cold!  Don't forget to pick up some cider donuts if you visit the mill.

Making apple cider on a snowy afternoon!

Several months ago, when the leaves were rustling on the trees and the breeze was still warm, we bought a cider press.  It was something we had talked about purchasing for a while so when the opportunity arose, we did it.
