I've often heard children say, "There's nothing to do today". I beg to differ. I'd like to inspire you to do something. Anything. Read. Bake. Hike. Fish. Plant. Sail. Climb. Play. Reach. Move. Laugh. Dream; and take time to sit with me on The Old Granite Step.

Memorial Day

We remember all of our servicemen and women today but mostly I remember my Dad; a gunner's mate on the USS Pawcatuck in WWII.  He was extremely proud of the time he served in the Navy.

Navy Hymn
Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walked'st on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Most Holy Spirit! Who didst brood
Upon the chaos dark and rude,
And bid its angry tumult cease,
And give, for wild confusion, peace;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Trinity of love and power!
Our brethren shield in danger's hour;
From rock and tempest, fire and foe,
Protect them wheresoe'er they go;
Thus evermore shall rise to Thee
Glad hymns of praise from land and sea
.

A Tragedy of Grave Proportions

We spent Memorial Day weekend in Waterloo, New York.  Waterloo happens to be the nationally recognized birthplace of Memorial Day.  Memorial Day is a federal holiday remembering the men and women who died while serving our country.

On our way home via Route 7 through New York state, we stumbled upon this wonderful cemetery in Brunswick, New York.  No, it's not the famed Forest Park Cemetery.  This is apparently called the Brick Church Cemetery.  It sits on both sides of Route 7, and unfortunately, is not maintained.  Surely, there are veterans buried here.  Soldiers who fought for our freedom; their graves now knee-high in weeds.

Forest Park Cemetery is listed as abandoned.  It appears that Brick Church Cemetery has been abandoned as well.  How can we abandon these graves and memorials for those who have gone before us?  Is this how we remember them?  This is a disgrace.

If you know of a cemetery that's been disregarded by your local township, contact your select board and ask them why.
